Hunger Strike Against SF Police Chief

Hunger strikers known as the “Frisco Five” camped outside the Mission district police station to demand the resignation of San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr. The activists protested excessive police force following a string of fatal shootings by officers of Mario Woods, Alex Nieto and Amilcar Perez-Lopez. Police officers involved in the 2014 death of Alex Nieto were exonerated by a federal jury in March 2016. Nieto was killed by a hail of 59 bullets in a public park. Community coalitions supporting the protest allege police target people of color. Chief Surh was forced to resign in June 2016 and the coalitions continue to demand police reform and cultural sensitization of the City’s largely white police force.
